About Acne

How Much Do Acne Products Cost?

Acne products which you can buy over the counter usually cost between $4 and $10 for tubes of 5ml or 10ml. Most products from leading brands are known to yield results within 24 hours. In fact, you can see your acne shrink after leaving them on overnight. These spot treatment products usually have benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient in 2.5%, 5%, and 10% solutions. If your acne is severe, higher concentration of benzoyl peroxide will suit you better. You must be aware though that spot creams could lead to irritation on sensitive skin. Also, keep in mind that 10% benzoyl peroxide is often used on chest and back acne.

The shrinking of your acne, however, does not necessarily mean you have eliminated them. They could just grow again right after you stop your spot treatment. You will need several bottles of acne products to clear your skin of those blemishes and you are likely to spend from $40 to $60 for treatment of mild to moderate acne.

Salicylic wash, which comes in bottles, usually costs below $8 per 6fl. oz. This product is used during shower to reduce swelling and prevent future outbreaks. A similar product, called pore cleansers, cost around $30 per 32 fl. oz. bottle. Both acne treatments exfoliate the skin to rid it of bacteria and dirt.

There are alternative products to acne creams which you can buy over the counter or purchase with prescription from a physician. Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is widely used among acne sufferers. For full effects, it is usually maintained for two to three months. You would be spending anywhere from $25 to $60 monthly, depending on the dosage and the brand that you choose.  It is important to consult a physician before taking oral treatment, as medicating without professional guidance could lead to sever outbreak. If you decide to choose antibiotic treatment, be patient enough to follow the whole prescription even if the acne has seemed to disappear. Otherwise, they will pop out all over again.

Facials and chemical peels at dermatological centers are alternate and more aggressive methods of fighting acne. They can be done once every two weeks or twice a month, with each session ranging between $75 and $200. Most acne treatments are not covered by insurance plans since they are considered a cosmetic, not a health issue. This means you will have to prepare your own money to get rid of the zit. However, there are insurance policies which allow claim for acne surgeries.

Acne can also be treated with cortisone shots. Each cortisone treatment usually cost $75 to $120. The shots shrink the acne until they dissolve on their own, and results can be seen within 24 hours. Spots that have been treated with cortisone are known to never develop again.

For marketing purposes, most dermatological centers do not reveal the exact cost of their surgery or laser treatment for acne. But you should expect to pay more than $2,000 for laser treatment or surgery on severe acne.

The Low Down On Kefir For Acne

Kefir is not a necessary food. It has a rather sour taste to it that many people will not enjoy. It is absolutely soothing on the stomach and can make you feel really good when you do eat it.

As a person with acne, I really do recommend that you do give it a try. It can benefit you a great deal for its anti-inflammatory properties; it’s an ability to heal the digestive track, and its ability to add the good bacteria’s back into your digestive track. When your digestive track heals, it allows you to absorb many vitamins and minerals much more efficiently.

Kefir is made from kefir grains and milk. Don’t worry about the milk. The stuff that is bad in milk for acne will be mostly neutralized once it is fermented. If you want to avoid using cow’s milk or another animals milk, then it is possible to make kefir with plant based milks. People have been able to successfully make kefir with coconut milk, almonds milk, and soy milk.

You should also be able to buy kefir already made at a health food store. So you do not have to make it yourself if you don’t want to. But you will need to buy the kefir grains at a health food store or products online.

Making kefir the standard way is fairly simple.

Here is what you are going to need.

– A jar. Allot of people use a mason jar. These jars are often used for fermented foods like pickles. I recommend a jar that can hold around 3 to 4 cups. You will also need a lid for this jar.

– Kefir grains. 1 to 2 tablespoons of these grains will be needed for a jar that holds 3 to 4 cups.

– A Nylon or stainless steel strainer. A tea strainer might do the trick

– A container or bowel. This will be used to strain the kefir later.

Follow these steps:

– Take 1 or 2 tablespoons of kefir grains and add them to the bottom of the jar.

– Add the milk. How much milk you add will depend on the size of your jar. In this example I would add around 3 cups. The main key is to leave some room at the top of the jar. ¾ of the jar should be filled. A little room needs to be left for rising.

– Place the lid on the top of the jar. It should be left a little loose. This allows the carbon dioxide to escape for proper fermentation. Living the top loose should also make for a less sour taste.

– Just leave it sit at room temperature. How long you leave it sit depends on how thick you want it and how mild you want your kefir to be. I recommend that you go for about 24 hours.

– Once it has had time to ferment, your kefir will be ready to strain. Simply poor the kefir into a strainer. This will allow you to take those grains that are left over and reuse them for another batch.

That’s basically all there is to making kefir. The liquid kefir that is left can be drunk on its own or be used to make other foods out of it. You can add it to smoothies, drink it plain, make kefir yogurt, put in your oatmeal, and even make kefir ice cream.

What if you don’t want to be bothered with all of this kefir stuff? Then you can simply take a probiotics supplement. I don’t have one in particular to recommend because there are so many to choose from. Just check an online store like drugstore.com and or amazon.com and read the reviews that are on there.

The probiotics will essentially do many of the things that the kefir will do, but I personally think kefir does a bit of a better job.

Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands producing oil called sebum on your face. When there’s too much oil, the skin pores get clogged up. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria (propionibacteria acnes) that cause acne breakouts. Apart from this, it also helps the face get rid of excess dead skin cells, another reason for the pore blockage. Hence, this cheap over-the-counter medication for mild to moderate acne can be considered a proactive kind of treatment. However, you have to continue using this as the bacteria can come back anytime and cause acne again. Many people can attest that stress has a huge negative impact on your skin and this includes the smoothness of your face. Have a healthy diet and regular exercise. Get enough rest as well. This will strengthen your immune system to fight against any kind of bacteria.

Some people are unfortunate enough to still get face bumps even if they’ve tried the best way to get rid of acne. If you’re one of them, that’s alright. If you have enough savings, consult a dermatologist and ask for help. He/She can recommend more effective solutions to this problem.

Acne Scar Treatment

After a lesion has healed, it can leave a red marks or hyper pigmented mark on a person’s skin. This is really not a scar, but it is called post-inflammatory change. The redness on skin or hyper pigmentation is seen as the skin goes through its healing process and remodeling, which takes approximately a few months to be exact from 6-12 months. If there is no more acne lesions develop in that area, the skin can heal normally. The post-inflammatory changes that caused by acne are part of the acne natural healing process. There are some practices and medications that can really help facilitate fasten this healing process. Picking at the pimples should be avoided at all costs. Scabs forms to protect the healing process that is going on underneath the skin. Pulling it off before it is ready will interfere with the healing process, making the healing process longer and the time that post-inflammatory changes will be visible.
